Morning Drive

Leave around 6am (earlier in summer, bit later in winter) when animals are most active. About 2-3 hours driving through different parts of the property and surrounding areas. Stop for coffee and rusks at a scenic spot. Back by mid-morning so you can have breakfast.

Sunset Drive

Head out late afternoon (timing depends on sunset). 2-3 hours exploring, watching the light change, stopping for drinks and snacks. Watch the sun go down over the Magaliesberg. On the way back the guide uses a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals starting their evening.

BIRD WATCHING

Over 200 Species Recorded Here

Jump on an open safari vehicle for a guided game drive with someone who knows the land. You’ll see antelope, zebra, birds, and whatever else decides to show up. No guarantees on what you’ll see (they’re wild animals) but there’s always something interesting.

Shamba Yetu is a bird watching paradise. The garden and surrounding areas host a wide variety of bird species. With your binoculars in hand, you can observe many different birds whilst listening to the sounds of nature.
Bird Watching

If you’re into birds, you’ll be happy. The mix of mountains, grassland, and bushveld means there’s a huge variety. Even if you’re not a serious birder, it’s hard not to notice the birds here-they’re everywhere and many are spectacular.

Where to Look:

Around Accommodation

You don't need to go far. Sunbirds in the flowers, mousebirds in the trees, barbets calling. Have coffee on your patio (at Punda Melia and Sungura chalets) and watch what shows up.

Bushveld Areas

Walk the trail and you'll see woodland species. Listen for calls-the guides can help identify what you're hearing.

Rocky Areas

Look up at the cliffs for raptors. Black eagles and buzzards soar around the mountain.

Near Water Sources

Dams and streams attract herons, kingfishers, and waterfowl. African fish eagle if you're lucky.

Best Times

Early morning (5:30-8am) is when everything's active. Late afternoon is also good. Middle of the day is quiet-use that time for other stuff.

What We Provide:
  • Complete bird list available (showing all recorded species)
  • Self-guided birding is free-just bring binoculars

WALKING TRAIL

The Fort Trail - Historical Walking Route to Anglo-Boer War Block House

The best way to experience the bush is on foot – it’s also the best way to get close to nature and wildlife.

Guests can enjoy the Fort Trail. This circular trail leads through the bush to an historical fort built by Boer soldiers during the Anglo-Boer War. The trail is marked and well managed.

This signature walk is 4-5km and takes 2-3 hours depending on how often you stop. The trail’s well marked, so you can do it yourself.

What You’ll See:

Indigenous trees and bushveld plants

Rock formations with views

Birds and smaller wildlife

The Block House ruins (stone walls still standing)

360-degree views from up top
